Star’s Story: A New Beginning for the Whole Family

Star Ellison 3 croppedMy name is Star. I’m a wife and a mother, and I also work in the veterinary field. I have been diagnosed as bipolar with alcohol and drug addiction. I have been going through treatment since June of last year, and I’m taking medication.

With proper medication, I am able to hold down a full-time job and deal with the day-to-day problems of family life without needing a crutch. With my medications I can actually deal with the problems that put me where I am and get my family back on track for dealing with their day-to-day problems.

I’ve been with my husband for 14 years, he’s seen me through a lot of times. We’ve just always accepted that we were just a little different. We never knew that it was a mental illness. I always thought my ups and downs were normal ups and downs and maybe I just felt my emotion more than others. Going to small town communities where I was not able to get the help necessary and to get a proper diagnosis and medication, I was lucky enough that we moved back to Atlanta and I found DeKalb Community Service Board.

Also my son who is diagnosed with Asperger’s and ADHD has also had some difficulty in adjusting, so he has been able to receive services here. We’re both able to take medication and with counseling work on everything we need to handle to get through life.
